Tenuta dell’Ugolino, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi le Piaole (2018)

Grape: Verdicchio
Geography: Marche, Italy
Appellation: Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi
Elegante!  The 2018 Verdicchio “le Piaole” is a solid example of how Andrea and Matteo have developed an impressive reputation for their artisan Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi wines.  The hand selected fruit is harvested from a single vineyard.  After 3 months of temperature controlled fermentation at 18C, the wine is aged an additional month in the bottle prior to release. Intensely elegant, this wine has a well-balanced structure that has found the sweet spot between acidity, fruit and residual sugar. Light golden yellow with pale green tones characterize this lovely Verdicchio. Its bouquet recalls white flowers, sage and anisette, mature fruits such as peach and apricot. The taste is fresh, mineral and full-bodied.  This wine is best enjoyed very cold at 45-50F in a large format glass. It pairs well with fish dishes, fried seafood, light pasta dishes in oil or cream sauces, mild cheeses, and light first courses.

Maeli, Rosso Infinito ∞ (2016)

Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carménère
Geography: Veneto, Italy
Appellation: Veneto

The infinity symbol represents the “infinite” amount of surprises this wine delivers throughout the years. The wine’s label is fashioned after the shape of a volcano, reminiscent of its volcanic origins. In fact, it is the volcanic soil that gives this wine its distinctive characteristics.
Vivid ruby red color. The wine presents a bouquet profoundly of cherry, ripe fruit and balsamic spice. On the palate it is rich and potently warm with a perfectly balanced acidity and minerality that conveys the volcanic nuances of the terrain. Sweet and silky tannins with an intense and persistent aftertaste.

Château Peyrabon, Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois (2015)

Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot
Geography: Bordeaux, France
Appellation: Haut-Médoc

Situated in the appellation of Haut-Medoc, Chateau Peyrabon is a cru bourgeois with a strong personality. Its current owner Patrick Bernard, of the wine merchant Millésima, fell under the spell of the charming 50 hectare estate of promising gravel terroir in 1998. Since then, M. Bernard and his team, led by Xavier Michelet, have been passionately dedicated to creating authentic wines that are elegant, silky, and marked by their freshness and fruity character – typical of an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6,5% Cabernet Franc and 3,5% Petit Verdot, this Haut-Médoc was harvested in optimal conditions between the 28th of September and the 7th of October. Peyrabon 2015 has  significant aromas of red fruits especially dominated by black cherry and red currant. Swirling offers a touch of cedar with a note of fresh aromas. The first impression is acidic and lasts until the finish on the tongue. The elegant tannic body is well constructed, round and fleshy. The retroolfaction confirms longevity and plenty of fruits. The refined wine making process allowed a successful vintage

Saturday: Kings County Distillery from Navy Yard, Brooklyn

Kings County Distillery is New York City’s oldest operating whiskey distillery, the first since prohibition. Founded in 2010, Kings County makes handmade moonshine, bourbon, and other whiskeys out of the 117-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Kings County Distillery, Winter Spice Whiskey

For this year’s fall seasonal release, we created an infusion of baking spices associated with mulled cider, hot toddies, and winter holidays. Using cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, allspice, black peppercorns, clove, and star anise, this whiskey is a bold but balanced answer to some of the cinnamon-flavored offerings from bigger distilleries that aim for a broader audience. Perfect for cocktails that like a spicy cinnamon kick, this whiskey is designed for crisp, cool weather.

Kings County Distillery, Bourbon Whiskey

Kings County Distillery’s Straight Bourbon is made from New York State organic corn and malted barley from the U.K., is twice distilled in copper pot stills and then aged in new charred oak barrels.  It is characterized by a rich aroma of fresh corn, balanced with the sweet caramelized oak sap from small barrels.  It has a very strong sweet base with flavors of vanilla and caramel, a deep molasses taste to the middle notes, and leaves a smooth finish with hints of cinnamon and autumn spices. Aged for at least two years, this bourbon is a precocious whiskey, surprisingly robust for its age.

Kings County Distillery, Peated Bourbon Whiskey

Peated Bourbon is a bourbon whiskey that conforms to the American requirements, but is made with malted barley that has been exposed to peat smoke, a more common practice in some Scotch whiskies. So it’s a scotch-like bourbon, flavorful and robust from having aged in a new barrel, with an added light smoky finish, reminiscent of a single malt. As far as we know, this is the world’s only peated bourbon and will appeal to the adventurous whiskey traveller who has tried everything–except this.
